Nourishing the Body in Autumn

In Chinese Medicine, autumn is the season of the Lungs and Large Intestine — a time to turn inward, slow down, and nourish the body’s delicate balance between moisture and dryness.
As the air becomes cooler and drier, our lungs are especially vulnerable to this shift. You might notice a dry cough, scratchy throat, tight chest, or even dry skin — all signs that your Lung Yin could use a little extra care.

To stay healthy during this season, it’s important to keep the lungs moist and support the body with warm, gentle foods that build resilience from the inside out.

The Healing Power of Pears

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), pears are considered a cooling and moistening food. They help clear Lung heat, soothe dryness, and relieve coughing or throat irritation.

When pears are lightly steamed and combined with honey, their soothing and nourishing properties are enhanced — making this a simple, delicious, and effective home remedy for the autumn months.

🍐 Recipe: Steamed Pear with Honey

Ingredients:

  • 1 ripe pear (Asian pear or Bartlett work beautifully)
  • 1 teaspoon raw honey (or more to taste)
  • Optional: a pinch of cinnamon or a few goji berries for added warmth and nourishment

Instructions:

  1. Wash and hollow out the pear, removing the core and seeds but keeping the bottom intact.
  2. Place 1 teaspoon of honey inside the hollowed center.
  3. Add cinnamon or goji berries if desired.
  4. Set the pear upright in a small bowl or heat-safe dish.
  5. Steam for 10–15 minutes until soft and fragrant.
  6. Enjoy warm, sipping the sweet syrup and eating the tender pear flesh.

How It Helps

This simple dish helps to:

  • Moisten and nourish Lung Yin
  • Soothe dry throat and cough
  • Calm mild irritation from dryness or seasonal allergies
  • Support digestion while providing gentle sweetness and comfort

In TCM, honey also has moistening, harmonizing properties and can relieve dryness or inflammation — making it the perfect complement to the pear.

Additional Tips for Autumn Wellness

To keep your body in balance this season:

  • Sip warm teas with ginger, licorice, or pear
  • Eat cooked, moist foods (soups, stews, lightly steamed vegetables)
  • Limit raw or cold foods that can weaken digestion
  • Take time to breathe deeply, supporting your lungs emotionally as well as physically
  • Consider an acupuncture tune-up to help your body transition into the new season with ease

In Harmony with the Seasons

Chinese Medicine teaches that true wellness comes from living in harmony with nature.
By choosing foods and habits that support the season’s energy, we strengthen our body’s resilience and emotional balance.

This autumn, take a moment to nurture yourself with warmth, rest, and nourishment — starting with something as simple and healing as a steamed pear with honey. 🍐💛
